Nitrazepam 5mg is a prescription medicine from the benzodiazepine group, mainly used for the short-term treatment of severe insomnia. It works as a sedative, helping you fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. It works by increasing the effect of a calming chemical (GABA) in the brain.
The usual adult dose is 5mg taken once daily before bedtime. Older adults are often given a lower dose, such as 2.5mg, to reduce the risk of excessive drowsiness. Always follow your doctor’s instructions and do not change your dose on your own.
Take Nitrazepam just before going to bed. It usually starts working within 30 to 60 minutes. Make sure you can get at least 7–8 hours of sleep to avoid feeling drowsy the next day.
Some people may notice temporary sleep disturbance (rebound insomnia) after stopping. This usually settles within a few days.
Do not take more than your prescribed dose. Taking too much can cause severe drowsiness, confusion, slow breathing, and in serious cases, unconsciousness. Seek medical help immediately if an overdose is suspected.
Some common side effects include daytime sleepiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, poor balance, muscle weakness, and confusion. These are usually mild but should be discussed with your doctor if they continue.
Avoid alcohol, late-night caffeine, and mixing it with other sleeping pills. These can either **increase side effects or reduce how well the medicine works.
Always take this medicine only after consulting a doctor. Avoid alcohol while using Nitrazepam, as it can increase drowsiness and side effects. Do not use it for long periods without medical advice.
Keep the tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
